ACCIDENT AT THE GASWORKS.

A DERRICK CHAIN BREAKS.

TWO MEN INJURED. A serious accidenb occurred at the gasworks shortly after-three o'clock ■yesterday afternoon, by which two of the workmen employed, on the construction of tho new gasholder' received injuries. I Several chains and blocks were being, used in hoisting ironwork into place, two men being engaged at each of them, working from ladders. While this operation was in progress one of the chains broke, and the ladder was knocked down, throwing throe men-to the bottom of tho holder, a distance of about fifteen feet. One of them, John FJngland, the foreman of works, who sustained' tho most serious injuries, struck tho edge of a projecting iron plate at the bottom, wijji fclte result that the calf of his left leg was very severely ga&hcd, and tho small bone of his right ivg was fractured near the ankle. The other injured man was Charles Hurley, who sustained a fracture of the left arm. The third man was not injured in any way. Dr. Barr was telephoned for, and \vas quickly in attendance The, injured men received preliminary attention on the iloor of the holder, after which Hurley was able, ~ v/ibu assistance, to get through.a sii.-a]l aperture at the base of the structure. The removal. of Fingiand was ;! matter of more difficulty as tho nature of his injuries rendered him hclplesr:. A stretcher was. lowered ii>to tha holder, to which the injured man was securely strapped, and he was thon hoisted over the wall of .tho holder by means of a derrick. _ The two men received further attention from Dr. Barr, and wore* then removed to th,o Hospital in the ambulance.
