OBSERVANCE AT NELSON.

HONOURING THE GALLANT

DEAD

The first; anniversary of the now historic landing of the British troops and the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps at Gallipoli on April 25th, 1915, was celebrated yesterday by religious services at various churches in the morning, and a combined religious service at the Church Steps in the afternoon.

How'the Australians and New Zoalanders landed at the- hay now known as Auzac Bay, on a precipitous coast, in face of the heavy fire, at point ulank range of strongly entrenched enemy soldiers, and how, despite appalling losses in proportion to their numbers, they carried with tho greatest gallantry the first ridge, and hung on with grim tenacity until guns, -stores and reinforcements were landed, is now a matter of history. It was a -oat of arms the glory of which can never fade. Many hundreds of our bravest and best from this Dominion, ■in that day, gave their all for their King and country. Therefore it was mlv fitting that the anniversary of .such an occasion should be celebrated n a fitting jnaniter, and the public given iam opportunity of honouring the living and dead heroes of that great day.
