ANGLO-JAPANESE ALLIANCE.

A NATIONAL PRINCIPLE IN

JAPAN

A discussion has been proceeding in certain newspapers concerning the value and durability of the AngWjapanese Alliance. Some correspondents in the Japanese Press say that China complains of the unfriendliness of British residents in China.

■ \ Baron Ishi, Minister of Foreign Affairs, on being interviewed, said it was superfluous to make protestations. Japan's loyalty to the Allies was real, and Japan resented the bare insinuation of disloyalty towards a friend in trouble. Discussion over the conditions of treaties was permissible m peace, but not when an Ally was engaging a relentless enemy. Japan was bound to England by close bonds of mutual friendship and mutual gratitude, despite enemy efforts to sow discord. The war was going to bring the world closer together.

Baron Takahasi, Leader of the Opposition, interviewed, said tine loyalty of Japan to the Anglo-Japanese Alliance is fixed as a great national principle. A change in the Cabinet would not alter the foreign policy a hair's breadth.

Baron Nakano, President of the Tokio Chamber of Commerce, says that the competition of China must not be allowed to endanger the Anglo-Japanese pol&aal relations.
