SOON AFTER GROUNDING

The Kaitoa, which went ashore near Terawhiti. last night., fefloated an hour and a half later. Some of the passengers, including women, wore taken on board again, but the fog came up thicker than ever, and the Kaitov had to stand by awaiting an 'opportunity to enter the port. Tho fog lifted and enabled the Kaitoa to get-to-Wellington soon after II o'clock this forenoon. : Tho passengers state that there was no panic. ; The vassal grounded 150 yards from the rocky beach, and two ■ boats wore quickly launched. The. sea. was quite ■calm. The passengers soon landed, and big fires were lighted op the beach, and biscuits, fruit, and hot' coffee served out by the stewards, and blankets sent ashore. The women passed the night under a tarpaulin shelter. Some.: passengers returned on board the Kaitoa when she refloated, and others were brought into ! town by motor cars. The passengers were "surprised on reaching the beach last evening to find the sun shining brightly on the top ot the hills, while the steamer was hidden in a fog.
