SALE OF A FLAG.

FOR SICK AND WOUNDED SOL-

1 DLERS' FUND

£1010 REALISED

<From "The. Colonist." Sept. 2.)

The- silk Union Jack presented by Mrs F. A. Bctt. for the Sick ani (Wounded Soldiers' Fund was sold by auction at the Empire Theatre last evening, and realised the handsome sum cf £101.0.

The Mayor (Mr C. J. Harley) referred to tlio. heavy casualty lists that were coming through, and said that in six month's every fourth man of the forces despatched from New Zealand was cither killed, wounded, or missing. He said that no sacrifice they could make would bo too great to help these men nm\ he uigpd the people to show their generosity- by bidding freely for the3iag. In Nelson the public had subscribed fairly well, but the subscriptions from the country —notwithstanding that some districts had given freely—had not •averaged 2s per head, and he hoped the country people would take the hint. Mr A. Gould conducted the auction, and th*. flag was sold to the following members of the Empire Defence- Fund ■Committee:—Messrs* C.-J. Harley, H. •LI. Duncan, E. B. Moore, G. M. Rout .Dr. Bett. Messrs T. A. H Field, M.P., tW. W. S>nodgrass, 11. B. Jackson, Rev. J. P. Kempthbrne and Mr C. Y. Fell, iox £1.05.

It is intended to send the flag to tho High Commissioner in London, to be v sed vn some occasion in connection with the war in which the Nelson men participate. Afterwards i* is to be presented to this city. Bids came freely, and when there was a isign of slackening, a patriotic spfl'ited citizen offered £10 if ten others woulu subscribe £1 each. The money was immediately forthcoming, and so the auction went on until it was announced that £957 had been subscribed. Then the announcement was made that if the «vim of £980 was reached Miss My.vsden ivould make it £1000. Tlio lios roiled in, and the required «iun w;is over-sub-scribed in a fnw minute*, with the result t.hat, with. Mis>; Marsden's second donation. £1010 was readied. After the sale cheers were- given for 'Mrs Bott, accompanied by the singing of "For Sho's a Jolly Good Fellow. Cheers were also given for Mr Gould. The 'Aa<r was made by Messrs McKay at.d Sox?, and the workmanship reflected th.? highest credit upon those concerned. . A. very fine programme or topical events was screened, including the Government film showing the review of the New Zealand Forces in Egypt, the training of the troops at Trentham, and the embarkation of the main force from Wellington, the Gala Day procession and other xvar films of more than ordinary interest. The picture of the New Zealand Forces in Egypt was followed with intense interest, .vhich was punctuated by applause as some special feature passed across tile screen. Ihe number of troops under review came as a revelation and the flying clouds of sand gave a vivid idea of the conditions under which our boy* trained for the "ampaign at the Dardanelles.
