A TORNADO OF SHELLS.
CHARGE OF THE LIVERPOOL
SCOTTISH
ENEMY BEG FOR MERCY
A private of the Liverpool Scottish 'Regiment in a letter cays:—June 16th. has been and will always bo a memorable day for us, for wo made the charge that day, and I should think wo ma.de our name as well. I cannot tell yo-u much about it—details won't look well in writing—but'we. thrashed. the Germans until they yelled for mercy. Just before we made the charge my officer came back into the trench with his face and nose bleeding. "We set our teeth, and when tho order came "Out of the trenches" I managed to get to the first and then the second trench'of the Germans, and ihere I ran out of ammunition, but I was lucky to got some from a. machinegun man v.-ho had been knocked but: I followed'the machine-gun- sergeant up a German communication trench, when a six-inch or flew past my head, ' blew the side oF the trench in, and I u::s buried .in the debris. I lay there <laze(T for a bit, and I don't know exactly what that shell did, 'but it caused a stream of water to flow over my head. A sergeant of the .Fighting Fifth helped met out arid bandaged my boad. . . . They took mo"in "the! iiiubulance to hospital, "but I did not
stay there longer than I could help.1 I wanted to bo with my battalion. When T did got back all my pals shook hands with me, as they had given me up as dead, having heard nothing of me since the charge.
The sights on the field were terrible —a regular slaughter-house and inferno. I thank God I am still.alive. I asked after the machine-gun sergeant whom I had followed in the 'communication trench, and they said ho was killed, so in a way it was lucky the shell came and buried me when it did.
