' PROFESSOR YON ZEDLITZ

Wellington, Aug. 20

The position of Professor yon Zedlitz, an unnaturalised German subject who occupies a chair at Victoria College, is still causing a considerable amount of hostile-criticism in Wellington, and a good deal of agitation to secure his internment. Tho matter was brought up in the .House of Representatives this after"hoon by question^ by. IVfessrs. Nosworthy" and; Fletcher. / ' ' The Prime Minister replied that the Government had treated the case" of ■Professor yon Zedlitz in the same way as the cases of other alieh|enemy subjects. The Aliens Cpnrmission examined ten or twelve witnesses. He was not quite certain whether any cr thy whole of the evidence was confidential, but he was quite willing/to communicate with the chairman of the Commission on the subject, and if any part of the evidence were not confidential then he would be very pleased to lay it before the House. So far a.s the GoI vernment were concerned, however, they were quite prepared to treat, and had in fact treated Professor Yon Zedlitz i in just the same way as any other alien i subject. _ , j Loud cries of "No, no!" j

The executive of'the Wellington Patriotic Society met to-night,, and[in coin.un'ttee discussed at length the question of; tht- retention of Professor voiuZedlitz.on the stair of Victoria College. Io was finally resolved unanimously, "That tho; executive of the Ne^v Zealand Patriotic Society, Wellington branch, confirms its previous unninious .decision' that Professor yon Zedlitz; should not be allowed to retain his position on tho staff of Victoria College, and that a deputetion-.from the Rociety should Avait"on the Victoria College Council with a request for his immediate removal, failing which a public meeting will be promptly called to demand his removal, and patriotic societies and public bodies throughout New Zealand will bo requested to'call similar meetings:" . ■MBa*l " " '■'•'••
