CHARGES AGAINST A CONSTABLE.

Dunstiin, Aug. 19. John Henry Howard, a policeman t appeared In the Police Court this 'morning to answer charges of \1) breaking and entering a butcher's shop with intent to commit a crime; (2) breaking and entering the pame shop and comiViitting a* crime therein, and '(3) thaihe did by night wilfully damage a pieco of glass. Sub-Inspector Broberg said that tho accused, until that morning, was a member of the police force for sSouth Dimedin. Recently a series of thefts of meat had been' committed at the shop in question. On August sth the proprietors set a watch, and Howard was seen to enter the shop by the back tloor, using a key. Senior-Sergeant Dart then entered the shop, and flowand dropped a ba.g containing a leg of mutton and dived through a plate.glass window. ' .-;■ ■■ ■ • The accused, who admitted the offences, was remanded.
