NELSON POULTRY ASSOCIATION.

PATRIOTIC SHOW. . Thn twenty-eighth annual show of thu Nelsoa Poultry, Pigeon, and Canary Association was opened at the Drill Hall yesterday afternoon. This year the net proceeds of the show^are. to be devoted to patriotic purposeSj ] ia if croing to tho Red Cross Fund and half to tho Btlgian Relief b\ir:d. Although there is a slight faljing-off in the number of entaies; as compared with last year, the total exceeds 7UO, and the high standard of qfiality^in all sections is fully maintained. The judges were Messrs J. Currio (poultry) and H. Stairmand (pigeons and canaries), of Wellington, and both gentlemen had heavy tasks in separating the prizo winners, Mr Stairmand not completing his work until evoning. Eight championships were allby^i to the Nelson show —five fo*poultry, one for pigeons, and two for canaries. These were won as ■follows:.' Baff Orpington: J. A. Stringer. Black Orpington: J. A. Kitching. Wbitio Orpington: K. J. MeLeunaii. Hamburg- Miss Gladys Manning. Any Other Variety Bantams: E. Barry. Pigeons, Fantail. C. Sowman. Canaries, Norwich, non-cayenne, fed : E. B. Martin. . Norwich, colour fed: J. A. Stringer. Tho special prize for the best bud in the show was awarded to an Old English Black Red Game cock owned by Mr"\V Coleman, which was described "by the judge as "true ti- type ai-d almost faultless." The runner-up was a Black Orpington cock ownefi oy Mr J. •V. Kxtching (Blenheim)—a typical specimen, and' thd tliird best, wa-j a Spangled Game cockerel of Mr Ji»- I>. Martin's, whicii, had it been hardei- in feather, would have giver Mr Coleman s bird a close run for first place. Speaking of the poultry section gencrallv, Mr Currio said that the gamo class" was exceedingly good, and comd not be equalled-in any other part or New Zealand. American White Leghorns were also a strong class, the Quality being excellent. ■ Tho bantams were the best, collection the judge had seen for years. Buff Orpingtons were another strong class. In the Wmte Orpingtons the champion mrd would be hard to beat anywhere. Hamburgs, although not strong numerically, _ were good in quality. There was a iair variety of ducks. Summing up the show aenoially, Mr Currio said that it coinDared very favourably with shows in other parts of the Dominion, and was run on up-to-date lines, thfc committee having nothing to learn in this direction. . ~ 'In tho pigeon section, fancy-varieties were not quite as numerous as usual, although there wore good entries ot FantaUs and Magpies. Working Homers were particularly strong, there bein.' no fewer than 140 entries, .tho quality throughout was excellent. -J.no pigeon specials will not be judged until tO~T&e was a large entry of canaries, and Mr Stairmand was loud m his praise of the all-round quality or .ho e*iLiJvr .section has been added to the schedule for cats, and those domestic pets-will be on exhibition to-oaj. Thirty-one entries have been icccivod including fifteen from Wellington, lhese ell/ml^ nVove a "Tfiat attraction.
