EARLY CLOSING.

MOVEMENT AT SYDNEY. Sydney, July 8. Two large and influential temperance deputations have petitioned the Hon. D. It. Hall to institute 6 o'clock closing. Archdeacon Boyce pointed put that late closing hours led to excessive drinking, fights, brawls and immorality. The Archbishop of Sydney said it was evident that Australia was leading the campaign against excessive drinking. There was no reason why the sale of drink should not cease at 6 in the evening like- that of other commodities. T3ie Rev. R. B. Hammond said that any politician who failed to realise the temper of the present hour, which had shown itself in favour of reform, would soon sink it»to oblivion. Mr. Hall replied that he favoured nationalisation as a short cut to prohibition. He promised to make representations regarding early closing to the Cabinet,as strongly as possible.
