Simla, July 7. The situation in India during recent months has been satisfactory. Returning immigrants from Ghadas attempted1 to create trouble in the Ptmjaub, but the leaders v/ere arrested, and are now on trial. The enactment of the Defence of India Act has had a steadying effect, and tho situation is well in hand. Tho outbreak of dacoity in the Western Pimjaub has been suppressed. It was due largely to economic causes. The Aft affords means of speedy trial. A number of cases of like character occurred' in the Backarganj district, Bengal. Prices- are still high, but Government action has relieved the pressure. Favourable rains should assist trade in reviving, though it has been hampered* by high freights. Tho wild rumours which marked the outbreak or" the war are noticeably fewer, and there is general confidence in the ultimate success oi the Allies.
