Admiral yon Spec's report on the Chilian action has been published. Ho says his squadron expected to attack a (single British cruiser, Taut it unexpectedly met Admiral Craddoek's squadron. ■ "I opened fire at 6.30. There was a head wind, and the ships rolled and pitched heavily. Observation and range-finding were most difficult, tho seas sweeping; over the forecastles an-1 conning towers, and preventing the use of seme p;uns on the middle decks, where the crews were unable i.o see th.c enemy's sterns. Tho guns of tho two armoured cruisers, however, worked splendidly." Admiral yon Spco believed tho British suffered more from.the heavy seas than,tho Germans.
