The Governor openetl Parliament.The Speech from-the Throne referred to the loyalty shown by Australia. Despite the great economic pressure arising from the war, measures had been taken to ensure the financial stability of the State. A surplus was anticipated to provide occupation for thousands left temporarily unemployed by the closing of the markets of the world to primary products. It was new found that the legislation endorsed at the elections need no longer be delayed. The legislation promised includes a supertax on certain classes of land; the construction of the city railway ancl North Shore bridge; regulation of meat, milk, fruit and vegetable supplies; bulk handling and storage of grain; a Government petroleum monopoly; aikl dealing with
alien enemies
