NELSON HARBOUR BOARD.

MONTHLY MEETING

The monthly meetinf of the Nelson Harbcur Board was held yesterday afternoon. Present: Messrs. H. R. Duncan (chairman), H. P. Washbourn, J. C. Mercer, W. W. Snodgrass, 11- B. Jackson, George Macmahon, T. Bell, I. Tunnicliffe, and Cantain Macnab. Mr. A. P. Allport was excused from attendance. The bank pass book showed the following balances: —Cr., general account, £1530 12s 2d;, on fixed deposit, £1500. Receipts: Pilotage, £459 6s 7d (£305 7s od in 1914; ditto since April Ist, £768 9s 5d (£612 5s 3d previous year); monthly'average, £384 4s 9d (£306 2s 7d); Motueka Harbour Board, £87; rent, £1. Satisfaction was expressed that the pilotage receipts showed an increase, the first recorded for some months. Payments amounting to £177 18s 3d were authorised. Mr T. A. H. Field, M.P., forwarded a letter from the Prime Minister in reference t 0 the shortage of insulated tounage, in which he pointed out that the Government was doing everything possible to relieve the congestion in freezing works. Mr. F. G. Mace, engineer for the Motueka Harbour Board, wrote in regard to the .maintenance of the dredge '"'John Graham," and stated that he had no hesitation in saying that ihe dredge was in far better working order and a much more efficient machine than when the Nelson Board had the dredge in commission.—Received.

The secretary of the Wairoa Harbour Board telegraphed inquiring if the Board's dredge was available for hire. —A reply had been sent stating that the dredge was under hire to the Motueka Board, and would not be available for some months.

The Town Clerk wrote inquiring if the Board would hire plant for the conveying of metal from Boulder Bank to the gasworks wharf.—lt was resolved that the Gas Engineer be invited to visit the locality in company with the Harbourmaster, and that the matter be left in the hands of the town members of the Board, with power to act.

Tho chairman reported that he had waited ou the Minister for Railways and Mr. Hiley, General Manager, with regard to the annual statutory payment of £500 £6 the Board and the purchase of the wharves, .both of which matters had been before the Department for some time. He had been assured that a communication .would be forwarded to the Board shortly. The chairman further referred to the matter of a nightwatchman on the wharf, which had also been brought before the Minister, who had expressed his willingness to re-onen the matter. On the motion of Mr. Washbourn, seconded by Captain Macnab, it was resolved that the Railway Department be again written to and asked to appoint a nightwatchman on the Railway wharf. . The Harbourmaster (Captain Collins) reported as follows:—The trade of the port for the month ending May 31st has been well maintained for this period of the season. During the month 150 vessels entered and left the port, including one ocean-going steamer and one inter-colonial sailing vessel, viz., 24 Union Company's steamers, 104 small steamers, and 21 sailing vessels, having a total of 31,468 tens register. The work in connection with the piledriving on the north side of the en-1 trance was again in progress, and would be finished by the end. of the week. Work authorised by the Board oh the wharf at Mapua had been completed. A derrick capable of lifting 25 cwt had been erected on the end of the wharf, rails had been laid down from the outer edge of the wharf and through the shed, and also a trolly placed in position. The above would greatly facilitate the handling of cargo from small vessels atid oil launches, and would also bo a great convenience to the isetttlers for the handling of their cargo on the wharf. The cargo d"rrMt had already been much appreciated by the owners of oil launches who had used it. All routine duties had been regularly attended to.— 'r%ie repcrt was adopted. Mr. Bell said the thanks of the Board were due to the member for the district and the Government for their action regarding po^srpstion at the freezing works, by which they were enabled to~*end away 6000 carcases instead^ of 20D0. which was a errant boon to Nelson. He moved accordingly. . Wv. Ma.omab.on, who seconded tho motion, said the rpf«Tt was due to the combined efforts of the different bodies.
