HEARTRENDING SCENES IN THE
WATER

Captain Turner, when the water was nearly flush with the bridge, turned to the wheelman and said, "Now try and save yourself; you have no further business here. Good-bye." The captain remained on the bridge.
In some instances women upon re*covering consciousness after being rescued by the boats, asked for their children, and not finding them, went almost mad.
The crowded boats moved in the sea among hundreds who were clinging to wreckage. It was horrifying to see hands slip off and the victims disappear with despairing cries.
Lady Allan, wife of Sir Montagu Allan, head of the Allan Line, was rescued, but her daughtens, aged fourteen and one, were drowned.
Mr. Casselier, a leading wine merchant, was rescued, but he lost £400,000 worth of securities.
