RECENT FIGHTING NEAR YPRES.

"EYE-WITNESS' " REPORT,

GERMAN ATTACKS AT HILL 60.

BRITISH POISONED WITH GAS

London, May 9 "Eye-Witness" reports:—

After severe fighting on the afternoon of the 2nd, our line north of Ypres wais re-established by the evening.

There were indications on Monday morning of a renewal of the attack, and our guns fired at considerable bodies of the enemy, inflicting heavy losses.

Fighting was renewed on Wednesday at several points round Ypres salient*

Clouds of gaa forced its to evacuate trenches on Hill 60, whereupon the German® rushed the hill, though temporarily checked by artillery.

The Germans, getting the advantage of confused fighting, followed up their success and forced a way to our supporting line in €he direction of Zillebeke, and took the . trenches to the north of the hill. The British counter* attacked and drove them off and captured the trenches except thosejon the crest and north-east of the hill.

The British, by another counterattack at midnight, regained the whole position north-east of the hill, but were again driven off by gases.

At the same time two British coun-ter-attacks on the trenches north-east of the hill failed.

"Eye-Witness" adds:—"The sight of comrades crawling about in agony, moaning for water and dyinj| in their tracks like poisoned vermin, aroused the troops' feeHiig. It is to be hoped the Britißh Empire will not rest until full retribution is exacted."
