OBITUARY.

MR JAMES DRUMMOND

There passed away at Upper Moutere early yesteiday morning a man of note in tins district, and a sterling colonist, in tlxe person of Mr. Jam;- s Drummond, who had attained the c> eat age of 04 years. Mr Drummon I was a Perthshire man, and came to New Zealand in 1851 by the ship Simut Ho settLed in Wellington, and 0. year later his brother William arrived in Nelson, the late Mr Challies and Measrr, Curtis brothers being passengers by the same vossel. In tlie year foliovviiig Mr Dinmmond, sen., came to Nelson, accompanied by his brother, the late Mr Alex. Drummond, of Waimea West, Mr John Drummond and fanv.lv. of Lower Moutere, and their sister the late Mrs Wm. Best, whose dau/b'ter us now Mrs Thos. Best, or Manure. Mr .James Druromond then left Wellington and joined his family and lelatiyes in Nelson. He settled ra the Jx wer Moutere on what was known as Curtis's property, near to where the late Mr Stephen Starnea..settled, box years later he shifted to Lpper Moutere. where he resided till the day of his death. In partnership with his brother William, he engaged in fernintr <ater starting a sawmill, and ultimateH adding a flourmillmg business to their activities, this being earned on for a long peri.«J. Mr Drummond was a man of strong individuality, taking a keen interest i- matters pohticnL and esperiaUy in local matters. *or a great many years he vn* a member of both the local road board and school conViittee. and in conjunction with the late Mr. Wm. Cook he was engaged in SnJav school work, a work which ho kid .side, after fiEty years of semoe, owin^ to the infirmities ot ago. His faithful service m this connection function at Upper Moutere some 15 ycais ?go- Mr Drummond leaves a i-Sow. but no family. The funeral takes place to-morrow afternoon.
