(Received May 0, 3 p.m.)
London, May 8. The Press Bureau states that there were 279 first class British and 725 other British passengers on board the Lusitania. Immediately she was struck she took a heavy list, and those who made for the port side had very little chance. The first class passengers were lunching at the time* of the disaster. All the survivors are in a pitiable condition. There are some complaints about the | absence of armed escorts for large linjcrs approaching the coast. The first and second officers and 67 of the crew, including four stewardesses, were saved. The Lusitania was struck on the starboard side. Five of the boats reached Queenstown late on Friday night. There were pitiable scenes, barefooted men and women being thinly clad and soaked. A Greek lady, an expert swimmer, swam for a long time before she was rescued. The missing include Mr. Elbert Hubbard and his wife, and also the whole of a theatrical company recently touring with the play "A Pair of Silk Stockings." Mrs. Band and her sen, and Mr Fred | Lasseter were among the passengers !saved.
