Lenders, May 7. The Cunard Company state that a .submarine sank the Lusitania off the Old Head of Kin sale, on the coast of County Cork, Ireland, at 2.30. Tlua Lusitania had 290 first class, 662 second class, and 361 third class passengers. The crew numbered 665. The Cuuard Compaaiy state that there are great hopes of saving many lives. A boat load of survivors is being to#ed to Kinsale. ! When leaving New York, Uie cap^uu of tho Lusitania laughed at the German threats. "We are too fast for them," he said. ! After being torpedoed, tho captain sent the following wireless message •-••• t •'Come at once. Big list. Position, 10 ( miles off Kinsale." j It is believed that the proprietor of a pro-German newspaper was on board ; i as also was Mr. Alfred Vaaderbilt. j Twenty of the Lusitania's boats and ■ 16 other beats- were on the scene- after the sinking of the liner. The passengers included Messrs. Charles Froliman and Hugh Lane, who had just offered Mr. John Singer Sargent, R.A., £10,000, to • benefit the lied Cross Fund, if he would accept a commission to paint their portraits. Mr. Sargent accepted at a record price. The Lusitania was not warned, bufc the boats were swung out as a precaution.
