THE OBSERVATORY.
Mi1. (av/Uiron has acquired 43 acres of grouiHl at the south-western corner of tho Port Hills as the site for the Cawthron Observatory. Of this area five acre?, were given by Mr. J. Henrys and twr- a<;vcs by Mr. F. H. Richmond. A series of obseVvations were made on the Po?i Kills for more than twelve montits, -arid the results showed conclusively that the atmospheric conditions are exceptionally favourable for .research m solar physics. Much greater steadiness of definition Avas obtained here than on the higher mountains -siH'h as Fringe Hill and Wooded Peak, an/!, indeed/it may be confidently affinn*?ti that at no solar observatory, at presejvt in existence are the conditions so favourable as those that obtain at the Tort Hills site. Splendid results may therefore be expected when the Qtaeoatory is erected and equipped. fetKO of the equipment, however, ta.kes n. long time to manufacture, especially 'the'diffraction gratings, and althwh" these vcre ordered more than twelvemonths ago, they are not likely to be finished till some time next year. The erefii'V} of tho buildings will of couirio- tare a much shorter time.
