At the meeting- of tho City Council last) night, Councillor Ha:npson said it would bo fitting for the Council at its first meeting-- to adopt an appreciative resolution regarding the gallantry of, tli© 'Jew Zealanaers at 'the Dardanelles.-) Ho would move: — "That this Council has leceived with; delight the news of the splendid achievement of the New Zealand and Australian forces in the successful at-' tack upon the Turkish troops at the Dardanelles, by means of which they hfivo been enabled to effect a, landing in ths face of tremendous resistance, and have contributed materially to the opening up of the Straits preparatory to advancing on Constantinople. The Council admires the bravery and heioism exhibited by all ranks, and it applauds the va-loui shown by our brave f-oldi-3vs in so p.randly upholding the honour of our flag and Empire. The Council deeply sympathises with the~ relatives of tliose of Mie men who have, so nobly laid down their lives in the {Men.* of the Empire and in the cause of freedom and iustice." f Councillor Piper seconded the n-.0-j tion, saying that he feared tilers' had; been great loss of life, but there had; been a grand achievement.
