FIGHTING IN PROGRESS
GERMAN FOOTING GAINED UNDER
COVER OF GAS.
FEEBLE ATTACK EAST OF YPRES
SIR JOHN FRENCH'S REPORT,

London, May 6
Sir John French reports that fighting is in progress at Hill 60 where the Germans gained a footing this morning under cover of gas, which was extensively used, tho weather favouring it.
They also made a feeble attack east of Ypres, and were easily repulsed, our artillery inflicting severe losses.
Tho Germans exploded a mine in'the neighbourhood of Givenchy, and used gas, four of our men being poisoned.
Otherwise the attack failed
