UNDER COVER.

The following spirited lines were written by a lieutenant in the Royal Welsh Fusiliers—a regiment which has in the present conflict added another chaplet of glory to its proud record.

I am lying under cover, In a damp and dirty trench, Writing "High Explosive" stories To a much-believing wench, Of the deeds of might and valour I've continually done — How I led a charge at midnight, How I grappled with a Hun; But it's all imagination, And my conscience gives a wrench, For I'm "lying" under cover, In a damp and dirty trench.

I am lying under cover In a damp and dirty trench, For the battle is commencing— We're defending with the French; It is all a deafening thunder, And the sharpnePe busting lew, For the Germans in their myriads Are attacking us, and so, We are waiting to receive them, Our'revengeful thirst to quench, And I'm living under cover, In a damp and dirty trench.

I am lying under cover In a damp and dirty trench, Every breath becomes a torture, Every moment now a wrench; Yes! we fought as we had hoped to, And we didn't flinch or quail; And they're telling me so kindly, I "made good" and didn't fail. But my life is slowly ebbing, And with blood the ground I drench, As I'm lying under cover, In a damp and dirty trench.
