INCREASED TAXATION

Capetown, March 19
, General Smuts, in the Assembly, submitted the Budget, providing for a special war tax to produce half a million, upon mines. The expenditure totals £11,406,000, leaving a deficit of £2,702,000, which will be met by an increase of Customs and excise duties, reducing the exemption limit for income tax to £300, and increasing the scale of the tax from Is to 2s.
