VIOLENT FIGHTING NEAR ALBERT.
PROGRESS BETWEEN PEETHES
AND SOUAIN
IMPORTANT ADVANCE AT
MESNIL.
(Received March 18, 10.15 p.m.)
Paris, March 18. Official—Violent fighting occurred at Car nary, near Albert, around a cavity produced by the explosion of a mine chamber on the 15th.
Progress continues in the woods between Perthes and Souain.
The position won north of le Mesnil les Hurlus on the 16th gives us possession of the military crest ,to the west of ridge No. 196 for a length of 800 metres. This advance secures the ground overlooking the northern side of the great ridge, extending from Perthes to Maisons.
The Germans, perceiving its importance, made violent efforts to recapture the position, supported by the Prussian Guards. Our mitrailleuses literally mowed down the attackers, and few regained the trenches.
