SOLDIERS AT TRENTHAM.
SUGGESTED PERMANENT BAND
FOR THE CAMP.
INSPECTION OF THE FOOD
MAYOR OF CHRISTCHFRCH
SATISFIED
(Special to "The Colonist.")
Wellington, Jan. 11. A surprise visit was paid to Trentham camp to-day by Mr. H. Holland, Mayor of Christchurch, accompanied by the Mayor of Wellington. In the ! camp are gathered soldiers from all parts of the Dominion. Mr. Holland's main object was to . investigate complaints regarding the quality of the meat. He found nothing wrong, but there is need of additional comforts for the men, and the camp, in his opinion, would be much better and brighter for a permanent band. This requirement will be the subject of appeal to New Zealanders, who have shown so much ready generosity towards their soldiers that Trentham will soon boast; its musicians. District co-operation will be necessary to provide comforts for1 the men, and at a meeting of the Wellington centre of the Patriotic Fund: Mr. Holland gave his assurance that Christchureh will willingly do its share. Among the comforts is specified a library of 2000 books. Mr. Holland considers the band indispensable. Speaking of the food at the camp, Mr. Holland said: "The visit I paid to the camp was quite in the nature of a surprise. No one knew I was going, and I must say that I was thoroughly satisfied with everything I saw. The meat used is of first class quality, and the men have a variety of choice from stew to roast or boiled beef and mutton, with an abundance of vegetables, including new potatoes. From the menu supplied to me I am thoroughly satisfied that the men have no cause for complaint, and I believe the men do not complain. In fact, I put the question to many of them, and they all expressed themselves as being throughly satisfied with the diet provided. The meat, I repeat, h all of first class quality. I went into the butchers' shop and saw uoeonked r».cat which I found to be quite satisfactory,"
