KING AND QUEEN AMONG THE
WOUNDED
ACCELERATION OF RECRUITING
THE FOOTBALLERS' BATTALION

The King and Queen visited 1100 wounded Indians at Brighton. Many conversed freely with the King and their smiling faces all testified to the grateful pleasure occasioned by the visit. Their Majesties also visited the British and Belgian wounded.
During the past week the rate of ipcruiting in London, Manchester, Burnley and Wolverhampton has increase!.
Six hundred volunteers have joia-d the footballers' battalion. They include many well-known amateurs and profes-
sionals
M. Vandervelde, the Belgian Socialist leader, addressing British Socialists, blamed the German Socialists for their almost entire indifference to the cruel crushing of Belgium, and the horrible offences perpetrated on the Belgians who were fighting for their freedom and
honour
"The Times," in a leader, says it is not likely that this war will be the last war. It is not even likely that a long reign of peace will follow, in which human relations can make permanent advance, unless there is a definite constructive effort to secure this. There is a danger in using optimism as a crutch instead of a spur, and letting slip opportunities whereby alone our hopes and ideals may be realised. Let us take the trouble to discover what elemnts of German kultur are sound, and needed as contributors to our common European life.
