TAKAEA.

(From "Tho Colonist,." Nov. 17.)

Death has laid a very heavy hand on this district of late, and several more very well known and highly respected residents have joined the vast majority. Mr. Andrew Sinclair, though for some years now a resident of Motueka, has resided here and bee* identified with Takaka for so long and in so many ways we yet consider him as one of us, and word of his death last week was received with deep regret by his many old friends here. Two especially sad deaths are recorded this week. Mrs. • Whelham., wife of Mr. Arthur Whelham, a very highly j respected citizen, passed away on. Monday last at the Nelson Hospital. Mrs. Whelham had been far from well for some considerable time, but her end was unexpected. Mr. Whelham and his family have the heartfelt sympathy of the entire community in their, great grief. The other death, which occured on Friday, was that Mrs. Ales. Haldane, a daughter of Major Coleman, of Richmond, and wife of one of our most prominent farmers. Mrs. Haldane, who is quite a young woman with a young family of five children, was'until a few weeks ago as well and light-hearted, as possible, and her sudden and untimely end has given her numerous friends a dreadful shock.' She and her husband were identified with all our local functions, and wellknown and liked from end of the valley to the other. The deepest sympathy is etended to the heart-brokeu husband and sorrowing children. The funeral of Mrs Ales. Haldane, of Takaka, took place on Sunday, and was one of tko largest in tho history of t-hs district. Friends and relatives came long distances in order to be' present, and the large assemblage was eloquent testimony of the high regard in which the deceased lady was held! Among many beautiful wreaths which were forwarded were those of the teachers, the Takaka Bowling Club, and the Takaka Racing Club

Mr Thomas Saywell, an old and respected resident of Richmond, died on Saturday morning at the residence of his daughter. Deceased, who was 81 years of age, retired to bed about 7.300n Friday evening, and about 1.30 on Saturday morning his daugr-ter was awakened and heard him gasping for breath. Dr. Washbourn was sent for, but on arrival could only pronounce life extinct. An inquest was held, and the Coroner (Mr J. S. Evans, S.M.) found that death was due to heart failure.

The death occurred at his son's residence at Dunedin on October 30th of Mr. William Lothian, at one time well and favourably known in Collingwood district as the manager of the Parapara Paint Works at Parapara, says the "Times." The deceased gentleman made many friends in this district by his geniality and sterling and upright character, and many old residents of Collingwood who knew him will be sorry to learn of his demise. The late Mr. Lothian, who was an old man, died suddenly, the cause being ascribed to heart failure. He leaves a widow and groMrnup family.

A well-known late resident of the Upper Buller district passed away in Nelson on Tuesday last in the person of Mrs Jessie Hunter, widow of the late Mr Robinson Hunter, of Fern Flat. The deceased lady was a native of Aberdeen, Scotland, but lived the greater part_of her life in New Zealand, the past 25 years having been spent at Fern Flat. She was very highly respected, and general sympathy will be felt with her family, who comprise Misses Mary and Teenie Hunter (Fern Flat}^ Mesdaities.Alex. Spiers (Kuma ra), "Alek.' "Cowan Ahaiira), "White (Fern Flat), and Arthur MeNee (Murchisori), Messrs W. R. and Jas. Hunter (Fern Flat). :

The funeral took place on Tuesday at Karori cemetery of the late Mr John Gibson Kelly, who was until recently in the Lands and 'Survey Department, Nelson, and formerly of Wellington and Christolmrch. The late Mr Kelly (says the "New Zealand Tiroes") retired from tho civil service about four years ago, and since that time had been- in private practice as a draughtsman in Wellington, until a few months ago, when his health began to fail and death resulted on Sunday morning. The deceased gentleman was respected and liked by all who knew him on account of his kindly and cheerful disposition.

Captain 11. Jacobsen, who for many years was signalman at Britannia Heights, tho Fort, died near Auckland the other day. He was in his 81st year. -

Marlborough's band of old identities is bereft of an interesting personage in Mr. David Lawrence, whose death occurred on Sunday, at the age of 86 years. The late Mr. Lawrence was born in Herefordshire, England, in 1828. and arrived with his wife and family in Nelson in the sailing ship Mataura_ in 1875. He came straight to Blenheim, and in the following year set ujvin business as a market gardener, which pursuit he. had followed until about a week ago. His vife predeceased him by four years, and he leaves four daughters— Mesdame.3 A. Hale (Nelson), G. Saunders (Blenheim), J. Fryer (Blenheim), and F. Butcher (Masterton)— twentythree grandchildren, and six great grandchildren.—"Express."
