Details show that the Germans made repeated attempts to cross the Niemen northwards of Grodno.

The Russian rearguard was trainferred on September 23rd to the righf bank of the river. The Germans, nob noticing signs of opposition, constructed pontoons and poured across.

Cleverly screened Russian guns then opene-d a .concentrated fire, sweeping the Germans in hundreds into the river A prolonged artillery duel followed.

The Germans again attempted t<» cross, but none reached the opposite bank.
