THE EMDEN'S EXPLOITS.
NEW ZEALAND BUSINESS
AFFECTED
CORNS.ACK AND WOOLPACK CONTRACTS.
\ (Special to "The Colonist.")
Wellington, Oct. 4
Tho exploits of the German cruiser' Emden in the Bay of Bengal have already had a direct effect upon an important branch of New Zealand trade. Most of the woolsacks and cornsacks used in the Dominion come from India, being shipped at Calcutta. About five cargoes come annually to New Zealand, and just when the Emden's first batch of captures in the Bay of Bengal was announced our merchants were endeavouring to arrange by cable contracts with the' Calcutta firms on a c.i.f. basis for the coming season's supply. They were unable to get a quotation of any kind because shipping has been absolutely held up at Calcutta; and it is not likely that any business can be done until the Emden is disposed of. .
