The Russians captured Tomaschoff after a sanguinary conflict. They also captured fortified .positions at Opole and Turobin, west of Lublin, and repulsed the Germans with hei.vy losses at Choroele.

A semi-official statement says the Russians cut off the Austrian left from the troops operating between Tomaschoff and Ravarusska.

News from South Poland indicates | that the chief Austrian army is fighting a desperate rearguard action, fieeiii£ amid increasing disorder. It is believed that 300,000 Germans have been withdrawn from the western front and are intended to assist the Austrians instead of East Prussia. Russian pairols are in contact with the Germans at Blaski near Kalisz.
