ASSASSIN AN ECCENTRIC

(Received August 2, -5.5 p.m.) , . Paris, August 1. ■M. Jaures was in the cafe discussing, til© peace campaign with the deputies, when Villain entered and assured himself that M. Jaures was present. - A few minutes later the curtain of the alcove was drawn aside, and a hand was seen with a revolver. Before the deputies were able to 'knock it up M. Jaures fell with twc shots in the head.
The assassin ran away quickly, butwas arrested; The crowd attempted to lynch him, and the police with difficulty placed him in a taxi-cab, which the mob nearly overturned. , :
It is denied that Villain is a journalist. He told the police that he fired two shots at the back of M. Jaures's neck, to punish him for his campaign against the three years' service law. He said, "M. Jaures is the enemy of my country >an,d I have done my duty."
The .deputies'placed the body on an ambulance, and formed a procession through the streets to the office of "La Humanite" accompanied by 10,000 bare-headed people.
The Government has issued a proclamation deploring M. Jaures's death, and appealing to the working classes not to add to the public excitement hy, agitation. It adds that the assassin' will be punished. . '
It is asserted that the murdei"er'& family are not free from insanity.
