MR. ISITT'S REPLY.
The member for Christchurch North long -ago won for himself the reputation of being a dangerous man to. in-1 terrupt. He has a, gift for swift, destructive. retort that leaves the ordinary interjector breathless. He' was telling the electors of St. Albans East how the Reform Government jerrymandered the electoral law by repealing the Second Bdllot Act without redeeming its promise to provide a substitute and so saVe the country from minority rule.^ He challenged any member of the Reform party to say that Mr. Massey 4ad not sought a party advantage in aWnean way, regardless of popular righis and election pledges. It was a diffiWt challenge for a conscientious RefoAner to meet, but one member of the audience tyied his hand. \ . "Has riot Mr. Massey sakl he will, do .something this next session^" the stalwart asked... "Wouldn't it\be fair to wait and see what he does?1!'
"Look here," retorted Mr
Isitt, "if
a man promises to give you twentyfive shillings for a sovereign and you hand him the sovereign, and he sticks it in his pocket and says he will tell you what he is going to do about the twenty-five shillings in a year or two ." A shout of laughter drowned the rest of the sentence, and the lieformer did not press his point
