LADY SEXTON'S DISMISSAL.

The action of the new rector of Crowland, near Spalding (Rev S. 0. Calver) in dismissing the lady sexton (Miss Sarah Jane Hill) is meeting with much opposition on the part of the parishioners, and a defence fund has been opened in order the legality of the rector's action may be tested, states a London newspaper. The office has been in the Hill family for over 150 years. Miss Hill has been discharged on the ground that women sextons, cannot properly perform all the duties of the office, whilst the rector further contends that the right of appointing the sexton rests with the incumbent, and net with the vestry. The Crowland Parish Council has held a meeting, at which it transpired that twenty-five years ago legal opinion stated that, as it had always been the custom for the parishioners to appoint a sexton, the right of alwaya making the appointment was now in their hands.
