\n itiqucsi was held this afternoon touching the defeth of Charles Warren Hutchison, who died yesterday at the Grey mouth hospital, as the result of a revolver shot "self-inflicted. The principal witness was Jeannio Todd, second cook at the Post Office Hotel, who said that she had been so employed about a month. She met tho deceased on tlio Remuera, from Glasgow, which arrived in Wolluigton on April 6. Edge caught hold of wit ? ness and deceased fired two more shots. Deceased aimed the revolver straight at Edge. Witness was taken into the hotel, and did not see deceased fire on himself. Robert Edgo^, a porter at the hotel, said that yesterday at about 12 o'clock Ise met the deceased in Tainui : street. As witness was on an errand the deceased turned his head when they met. Witness began to hurry after they had passed. He thought the deceased looked a bit strange. Witness knew of the .disagreement between the deceased and the last witness, so he went back to the hotel as quickly as he could. On reaching the hotel he heard screams, pad looking: through the office window lie saw the deceased in the yard. The girl had hold of both his wrists. In one of deceased's hands he saw a revolver. Deceased was struggling, and broke k«>3e on seeing witness. Witness rusaed out into the yard, and when the deceased saw him he broke loose and fir^d the revolver at witness, but did not say anything. Edge said he was not three yards distant when deceased fired. Witness heard the cliok, and thought it was a blank cartridge. The second shot was aimed at witness, the bullet just grazing the hair of his head. Deceased then turned the revolver on the girl, and witness dived coder the deceasod's arm and caught the girl. The third shot was Sred intentionally at the girl, but missed. The girl fainted, but witness Managed to carry her into the office, i "Witness again went to go into th& >ard, and as he opened the door he heard a shot, and on looking in the v r u sh-hous& he saw the deceased lying there. Witness thought the deceased had been .ixinder the impression that j he had shot the girl.
The Coroner returned a verdict of Siuicido while in an abisormal state of mind.
