There was a sensation in town this afternoon. A young man! named Charles Hutchison," a veterinary surgeon, went to the Post Office Hotel to see a young lady employed there, and who was a shipmate of Hutchison's from England. * Seemingly his visit was umyelcome. and he was told that the girl' had gone out. But he waited about and eventually seeing the girl, caught hold of her /and dragged her into a washhouse.
A member of the hotel staff heard screams, and rushed out, and beheld an astonishing spectable. The girl had the man clasped by the wrists. In one hand he held a revolver. Ho wrenched his right hand free, and Hutchison levelled the revolver at the'girl and fired, but the shot missed. ■The hotel assistant seized the gin and got her away. In so doing he narrowly escaped instant death, having ducked his head just in time to miss a second bullet. The girl was carried to safety. Hutchison turned the revolver on himself, and, placing it against his left temple, fired and fell bleeding copiously in a state of collapse. . He was immediately conveyed to the hospital, where he subsequently died.
