MARVELLOUS ESCAPE FROM DEATH.
TWO NATIVES UNDER OVERTURNED CAR.
RESCUED JUST IN TIME
[United Pbbss Association.]
Wellington, June 11
One of the most providential escapes from death that could well be imagined occurred this evening in a lonely part of Evan's Bay. A motor car, turned bottom xippermost in the water a little way past the patent slip, was the [alarming sight that met the gaze of a ] passer-by who had heard a preliminary (crash about six o'clock. The man, ] whose name wa-s not ascertained last (night, waded in and discovered a man S and a woman in the water under the I overturned car. He rescued thr couple, who proved to be a Maori and his wife, Mr and Mrs Ngatuero., who reside at Coutts, Kilbirnie, whither they were proceeding when the mishapj occurred. The woman was in a semiconscious condition, and Dr. Elliott was summoned. He found that both were suffering from shock, and their immersion in the water. They were rendered first aid, and were subsequently carried in the ambulance to their home. Had it not been for the fact that a man happened to be passing along the road, the Maoris would most certainly have been drowned. There is only one house in the immediate vicinity, and the accident would probably have been unnoticed until it was too late to save the Natives' lives.
