A fire gutted the offices owned by Mr W. Good and occupied by Mr Richards (land agent), Mr Erthington "(lawyer), and Messrs Hei and Daw son (lawyers). The premises of Messrs Buhche and Parker (land agents) and Mr Airey (draper) were partially gutted and damaged by water, and Good's jewellery shop and Mr Locket's surgery above also suffered from water. The fire occurred in old and inflammable buildings, and had a big hold when discovered. The brigade "made excellent efforts to save Good's stock. The "buildings were insured for £1850, Good's jewellery stock, which was little damaged was insured for £1620. Airey's .drapery stock, which was mostly destroyed, was valued at £2500.
