The Waimea County Council yosterdav resolved to recommend the appointment of Mr John QorMr to +'b© Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, vice Mr Peter Higgins,' deceased.
Mr J. A. MacPherson has consented to contest, the Oamaru seat as a nominee of the Liberal Associatioi, states a Press Association telegram.
Mr. D. P. Scarfe who has been transferred to the position of manager of the Christchurch branch of Messrs. Hallenstein Bros., Ltd., left i ,i- Christchurch on Wednesday.
Two well-known old .re side r; is of Nelson passed away yesterday. Mr Robert Burns, of Washington Valley, who hasl.been ailing lately, pas«ec away unexpectedly as he was about his place I yesterday. For about fifty years deceased was. employed as.a Larber at the "Old Stand" (West's, now White's) in Bridge street. He was seventy-four. years of age. The other old citizen was Mr George Marshall, of Bridge street. Deceased was well known for many years as a fruit grower, his orchad in Toi Toi Valley being for a long time the largest in the city. He took a keen interest in mining, and assisted •mahyyentures ; in thejprovince. He had' reached his eighty-fourth year.

A Press Association message from Chriatchurch states that a large gat"^; ing of Canterbury journalists assembled yesterday afternoon to make a presentation to Mr S. Saunders, who retires this month from the editorship or the "Lyttelton Times." Mr. W H Triggs, the editor of "The . Prese" . (Christ; church) presided, and m the course ot his speech referred to the- sterling, services rendered by Mr Saunders to his party. Mr W. G. Atack, the editor of the "Canterbury Times," and Mr R. 'Bell;? of Ashburton, also spoke'appreciatively of Mr Saunders as a journalist and a friend.. Mr Saunders m. reply returned sincere thanks for the pesentation, and for the very kind references made to him..'
