A CRISIS INEVITABLE.

THE MINERS DETERMINED

PITS EXPECTED TO CLOSE

DOWN

(Received June 2, 0.5 a.m. ) Sydney, June 1. A crisis at the Maitland coalfields appears to be inevitable. A notice has been posted at the pits stating that unless the men worked the afternoon shift to-day the mines would be closed down. The men at the Greta pit did not work the afternoon shift, and those at other collieries appear to be equally determined. It is almost certain that these pits will be closed to-morrow, rendering idle nearly 4000 men. The executive of the Miners' Federation is not advising the men in thematter, leaving them to fight their own battle, but an attempt will be made to confine the trouble to the Maitland field.
