DELAY IS DANGEROUS.

The mayor of a village in the Albi, in the south of France, which has been much troubled by bands of gipsies, received a letter from the prefect of his department asking him if tho country was much troubled with campagnols, a 1 species of field mouse. The mayor did not know what a cam- i pagnol was 3 but jumped to the conclusion that the word must mean gipsies. He thereupon wrote back saying that the country was infested with them, and asked for instructions. The reply was: "Pojson them as quickly as possible." The mayor's mistake was explained to him before there was any possibility of putting this drastic order into operation.
