THREE SICK MEN SECURED

. The mail steamer Paeifique has brought news of the landing of a punitive expedition at : Maleliula by the French gunboat Kersaint to punish the Bignambus tribe for attacking the crew of the recruiting steamer Guadelope, when three of the crew were killed and

eaten. . The arrival of the Kersaint created a panic. The natives fled to the interior, leaving three sick men behind. One confessed that he took part in the murder of the-three men from the Gaudelope. Tie men were placed in gaol. The rest of the tribe escaped, tne country being too rough for the Kersaint's men to follow them. \
