FIRE AT COLLINGWOOD.
NARROW ESGAPE OF A STORE
But for the fact that the s.s. Hina jyas leaving Collingwood for Nelson at 4.30 on Thursday morning there, would probably h.apo been a serious 'conflagration at Messrs W. G. Riiey and Co.'s store_j re'pdr'ta-th© "Golden Bay Argus." M'r J.A." Miles, who was down at the boat at 4 a.m , noticed a glare in si storeroom adjoining the drapery department and immediately gave the alarm. Others were quickly on the scene, and a bucket brigade had the fire practically under control when members of the fire brigade arrived with hose and reel. A few minutes ■ with the hose sufficed to completely extinguish the flames. The fire was confined to the storeroom, where considerable" damage was done, principally by water. The drapery department', also suffered somewhat in this respect. It is understood that the amount of damage done is well covered by insurance. The cause of the fire is unexplained, a* no one was near the 3>lace of origin since Wednesday morning.
