THE HOLLAND CASE.

PETITION FOR RELEASE

refused:

MR HERDMAN .INTERVIEWED

(Unitkd Pkebs Association.]

Wellington, April 23

In connection with Holland's sen- j tenco the Hon. A. L. Herdmari informed a ''Post" reporter that Holland was. convicted by. a jury ' af-ter careful investigation, and it was not seriously suggested by anyone-that'he''was not guilty of the offence." -TW" Chief-Jus-tice; passed ' a sentence which was considered reasonable. Under the circumstances he knew of no reason which would justify him in advising the Governor to interfere with the sentence imposed. To accede to the wishes of those who wore petitioning for Hoi-* land's release would he to make the administration of justice ridiculous. This was not Holland's first offence, as he was convict-ad on two other occasions. In Sydney in August, 1896, he was convicted of criminal libel and fined £50, in default throe months' imprisonment; and at Alb-ury in May, 1909, he was convicted of sedition and sentenced to two years' imprisonment. , Dunsdin, April 28. •""The- Hon. J. T. .Paul has received the following telegram from . the Minister for Justice:—"The Hon. J. Alien has communicated to me the representations made to him by the deputation introduced by you, urging the remission of the sentence imposed upon Holland. The matter,has received my very careful consideration, and I regret that I can see no sufficient grounds to justify me in recommending the Governor to grant any remission of the; .sentence imposed upon Holland." . Masterton, April 28 The Masterton branch of the Social Democratic Party has carried" a resolution protesting against the unjust sentence passed "on H. E. Holland, editor of the "Maoriland Worker," demanding his immediate- release, and, further, demanding the erasure of his conviction from the criminal records in view of. the j obsolete charge. • ;
