NELSON EDUCATION BOARD.

MONTHLY MEETING.

The monthly meeting of the Nelson Education Hoard was concluded yesterday; All • members were present. The chairman (Mr. Lock) applied for and was granted leave of absence for tho meeting, and Mr. Smith -was voted to the chair.

On the motion <rjf Mr. Searetlebury, seconded 'by Mr. Franklyn, it was re« solved that prices bo invited for the removal of the Glenhope school to a site to be selected by residents. The treasurer's statement showed the following balances: —General account, dr., £492; cr., building account, £2052;" technical account, di\, £1021; total credit balance, £538. The secretary stated that there was a large amount outstanding on the technical account, and he had made application to the Department for £850 capitation. . It was resolved to grant £5 to the Upper Sherry school for conveniences, and to provide a 200-gallon tank. It was resolved that the Board- provide material for a school at Tophouso.

Tenders were dealt with as follows: Waimangaroa, repairs to residence, fresh tenders to be invited; Wai-iti, removal of school, no tenders received; ■Raituna, painting, Mr. H. L. McKay's tender of £13 12s accepted- Granity; painting roofs, no tenders received; Church Hill, painting school, Mr. J. E. Burnett's tender of £23 accepted.

A report on the schools requiring inside painting was submitted by the inspectors and adopted. Applications from committees were dealt with as* follows:—Black's Point, £7 16s, -granted, and tenders to be called for interior painting; Riwaka, increased accommodation at Brooklyn, application to be made for a grant for an additional room; Granity, filling iri at Hector, tenders to be called; Granity, teacher's office, deferred; Granity, nnisical instrument, declined; Murchison, £5 extra granted for fencing; East Takaka, repairs to cottage, inspector to report; Upper Moutere, repairs, £2 2s 6d, granted; Charleston, painting and repairs, report to be obtained ; Suburban' North, papering, etc., residence at Happy Valley, tenders to be called; Westport, sundries, £33 19s, granted. An application from Mr. Brown, Waiuta, for payment of salary-while on leave was declined, though the Board regretted the "circumstances attending Mr. Brown's leave.

Messrs. J. Hunt and W. D. Harkness, representing the Richmond School Committee, waited on the Board regarding the sanitary arrangements _at the school. The necessity for making provision for the disposal of nightsoil was emphasised. Members of the Board expressed astonishment at the sanitary conditions of Richmond generally, and considered that the borough wanted, "waking up," and a system of modern drainage instituted.' It was resolved that Mr. Smith meet the committee at the school. It was further resolved that the Board write to the Richmond Borough Council, calling upon that body to makes, sanitary ar-. rangements for the Richmond schools. Applications for teacherships were dealt with as follows:—Arapitb, fresh applications to be called ; Ranzau. assistant, -names of Misses Mabel Hill and Ida V. Dement to go forward; Spring Grove, assistant, name of Miss Elvira Peart to be sent on; Denniston, name of Mrs.Seddon to go forward. On Mr. Smith's motion it was resolved to make application to the Department for a grant for additions to the Ranzau school. A letter was read from the Kaituna Committee objecting to proposed alteration in district boundaries.—No action taken. It was resolved that the matter of the establishment of a; school committee at Tarakohe be held over until next meeting. • . Mr. W. A. Rumbold, head teacher, intimated that he was prepared to act as truant officer for Rpefton. The Hope School Committee was granted £2 10s for iv bath at the teacher's house. The sum of £8 10s was granted tho Cape Foulwind Committee for repairs to tho fence at the school. It was resolved that renewed application be made for a grant for a new school at ■Whakarewa. The following appointments were approved : Dovedale, sole teacher, Mr. li. S.: Silcock ; Sergeant's Hillj sole teacher, Miss T. Doyle; Ngatimoti, solo teacher, Miss E. Robinson; Brightwater, assistant female, Miss C. Power; Granity, assistant female, Miss vG. j Pmvley, Murchison, assistant female, Miss L Dement.

It was resolved to invite fresh' applications for teacherships at Bainham and Tutaki.

The following resignations were accepted:—Miss M. Hill, assistant female, Seddonville; Miss B. Williams, assistant female, Reefton; Mr. T. N. Hewlett, solo teacher, Clifton Terrace } Miss J. Trott, assistant female, Spring Grove; Misj-i N. McElwee, assistant female, Westport. In accordance with notive given, Mr. Harris moved that the meetings shall be held on the Monday previous to the last Tuesday in oach month, ; continuing on the following day, if necessary, the finance committee to meet at 10 a.m., and the technical committee nftor the finance committee, and pi-ior to the ordinary ..Board, meeting. The motion' was seconded by Mr.Shepherd,- who, however, said that he objected to travelling on Sunday. Other members could do as they liked.

It was pointed out that an arrangement had been made for a car to bring three members from the West Coast each mouth. If one lnomberwas to come by another route the cost would be prohibitive.

Mr. Gothard said it was important that all the West Coast members should travel together on the grounds of expense. The arrangements entered ■into might fall to the ground if one member refused to go.

Mr. Shepherd said he would not make it a Hard and fast rule to travel on Sunday.

Mr. Franklyn said they must respect the religious sci'uples 'of any member; but if it was followed out a member who had such scruples should not eat dinner on Sunday, as it had to be cooked. Neither should' he read the newspaper on Moncb.y morning, as it was got ready on Sunday. , Mr. - Harris.'pointed ■ out that Mr. Shepherd, under tho proposed arrangement, would reach Nelson in time to go to church on Sunday • evening. A saving of £10 a month would be effected, and they would have more money to spend on the schools. If Mr. Shepherd would not come in he would have to vote against his own motion.

Mr. Benke agreed with the motion. The majority must rule, and Mr. Shepherd should fall in with the views' of the members.

Mr. Shepherd said he would not make it a hard and fast rule to come.
