Should you honour me with a renewal of your confidence on the present occasion, I can only say that whilst I will at all times do my utmost to promote the steady development and progress of our Borough by all legitimate means, I will be opposed to adding to the burdens of the ratepayers by plunging into any expensive undertakings beyond the means and the requirements of our present limited population, it will ever be. my aim to keep the rates as low as possible, and to carry on within our means. Again thanking you for past favours, I remain, Your obedient servant,. 1773 JAMES HUNT. HARBOUR BOARD ELECTION. j TO THE ELECTORS OF THE WAIMEA COUNTY. T ADIES AND GENTLEMEN,— - H-^ At the request of a number of Ratepayers, I beg to offer myself as a Candidate at the forthcoming Election to represent you on tho Nelson Harbour Board. My views on Harbour matters are as follows: — That, whilst recognising- the good work done by former Boards, I consider the time has How arrived when a more progressive policy should be commenced by the Board, for. tho following reasons :— That the general trend of shipbuild-ing'-throughout ■ the world is to ,materiaily increase the size of all new ships. This would mean that oversea ships would soon cease to be able to call at Nelson. Also, however good our road and railway system, and however productive our lauds may be, the progress of the district depends absolutely on the efficiency of our Harbour, so as to j enable oversea ships to work the port, and thus carry away our produce to foreign markets. It is also agreed by most electors, if not by all, that our district has now made a decided forward movement in our frozen meat industry, fruitgrowing industry, and settlement of our back country; therefore it must be very patent to all that it is ridiculous and unbusinesslike to increase our production unless we make some adequate provision for a harbour to meet the requirements of our expanding district. On these lines, if elected, I shall use tire utmost endeavours to forward the interests of the Nelson District on any question that may come before the' Harbour Board. I am, .
