Mr. Arthur F. Wimsett, of. the chief post office, has been appointed representative for the Nelson district for the Government national provident fund.
A London Press Association cable states that Mr. Thomas Hardy, the novelist, has married his secretary, Miss Florence Dugdale. Mr. Hardy is 73 years of age.
A Melbourne Press Association cable reports the death of ex-Police Sergeant Steele, who wounded and captured Ned Kelly at the Glenrowan Hotel.
Mr Henry Blaekmoro, one of Tuapeka's pioneer gold miners, died on Tuesday night at Waipori, where he lived for nearly fifty years. He was for some years manager of the Lammerlaw Flat Hydraulic Gold Mining Company, says a Press Association telegram.
On Saturday the staff of the "Manawatu Times" presented the retiring lessee, Mr H. B. Drew, with a case of silver-mounted pipes.
At a meeting of the Temuka branch of the Reform League last uight, says a Timaru Press Association telegram, Colonel J. T: M. Hayhurst, Mayor of Temuka, was announced as the .Reform candidate for that electorate"- fcfc the next election.
A Wellington Press Association wire says that although it has beon generally understood that Mr Diamond Jenness, of Lower Hutt, who was a member of the Stefansson Arctic expedition, was safe, all doubt has been removed. His father, Mr G. A. Jenness (Lower Hutt), has received a cablegram from Ottawa saying: "Jenness safe."
