RIWAKA.

The monthly meeting of the Riwaka School Committee was held on Monday last in the Riwaka school. Present: Messrs. S.M. Askew (chairman), T. Cook, J. H. Clark, A. Duncan, A. McLean, G. M. Deck, C. P. Fry, and the secretary. , ■ -»r o A report was received rrom Mr. b. W. Street, the newly appointed master to the Riwaka school. There were 107 names on the roll, and the attendance was satisfactory. He had reorganised the school, so as to make the best use of the limited space available He also pointed out some necessary requirements. Mr. Trevella reported 91 names on the Brooklyn roll. The attendance in the senior division was good, but in the junior division unsatisfactory. Miss Raikes had been appointed temporary teacher, and Miss Moffatt the new probationer, had taken up her work. . Correspondence was received from the Education Board as follows:—(1) Re the appointment of Miss K." Bolton to Tahuna school; (2) re condition of Riwaka schoolmaster's residence; (rf) etating that the sum of £5 had been voted towards erection of new outbuilding at the Riwaka teacher's residence: (4) stating that Miss Nina Moffatt had been appointed to probationership at Brooklyn school: (5) stating that the sum of £1 had been lodged to the committee's credit at the" bank towards the cost of "gravelling the. paths at the, Brooklyn teacher's residence; (6) stating that the Government is to be approached for a grant for a side school at Riwaka Valley and if the proposals put before them are favourably entertained they would take steps to.acquire the site offered by Mr. A. Inglis; (7) forwarding the names of the two applicants for the position of assistant^ teacher at Brooklyn school, and enclosing their qualifications and testimonials. It was resolved :—(1) that application should be made °to the Board for material required for the Riwaka school ,• (2) that the chairman and Mr. T. Cook form a visiting committee, in conjunction with the secretary; (3) that Mr. J. McNabb be asked if he would undertake to build the outhouse at the Riwaka teacher's residence; (4) that a copy of the Board's letter re side school be forwarded to Mr. J. Francois, "as representing the valley vesidents; (5) that the committee meet in the Riwaka school, a fortnight from date, to arrange hop-picking holidays; (6) that tenders be called for firewood for both schools. The committee cnrefully considered the applications for the Brooklyn assistant ship, and it was decided to _ recommend Miss Boundy for appointment. Accounts amounting to £2 16s were passed for payment. The cojnmittec extended to Mr. Street a very warm welcome, and wished him all in his school work. A motion to this effect was carried by acclamation. Mr. Street suitably responded. The meeting then terminated.
