Lily Burtoushaw, aged seventeen, of Wivelsfield, near Hay ward's Heath, Sussex, has taken up ploughing. Her healthy cheek© show that life in the open agrees with her, although: she says she finds farm work somewhat hard. The teachers' strike in .Hertfordshire wasPnot undertaken lightly. For^pmer time the' teachers in the county have been complaining about their salaries, and at least six weeks' notice was given of the intention to strike. The salaries are said to be the lowest in the country. The average for a headmaster is said to be £114, for a head mistress £88, for certificated masters £80, and "for certificated mistresses £60. These arc -.absurd salaries for men and women who are expected to train the future citizens of a..great country. It is a sad commentary on English institutions that teachers, instead of pointing out to'their pupils the■ orils of strikes, should themselves bs setting an object' lesson iii this method -of settling .an economic grievance. We are bound to admit,, how* over, that the education authorities of Hereford, by expecting teachers to work under such "sweating" conditions, are mainly-- responsible, for what has occurred. ,■" - '• ■■ -
