Speaking at' the Anniversary Regatta dinner at- Sydney last week, Judge Backhouse had something to say in reference to present-day foibles and fashions. "There Avas a proposition," he remarked, "to have races this year for women, or, as some people prefer it ladies. . I am glad to say the suggestion was negatived. We have quite enough undressing in the streets— ; (Loud laughter)—and I notice that a Pennsylvanian professor has been saying that women are beginning to eat more, because they have to keep up their temperature^—(Loud laughter) —indeed, the Pennsj'lvanian professor goes into details about things which an ordinary professor ought to knoAv nothing ahout (Laughter). The men, also, undress a great deal too much, and I would recommend to them and to self-styled Adonises who 101 l about our. beaches to bear in mind the sage c-ld Avarning 'In the first place, your clothes were meant to keep you jyarm, and in the second place to prevent bus horses shying at you.' " (Loud laughter.)
